Free Citizenship Workshop to Mark Citizenship Day
Atlanta, Georgia, September 12, 2018 — A free citizenship workshop is being hosted on September 15, 2018 to mark Citizenship Day. The workshop is held at Pinckneyville Recreation Center (4650 Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, Berkeley Lake, GA 30096) from 9 AM - 12 PM.
Citizenship is a right and a responsibility in our democratic country. There are nearly 9 million Legal Permanent Residents (LPRs) eligible for citizenship. However, only 10 percent naturalize each year. The goal of the free citizenship workshop is to increase the number of naturalized citizens in Georgia.
Naturalized citizens are eligible to vote in local, state and national election as well as run for office. As Georgia’s elections become more and more competitive, it is imperative that immigrants, who are eligible to vote, register and cast their ballots.
"We understand that the cost of application, legal fees and unfamiliarity with application process and lack of in-language support are some of many reasons why eligible individuals delay their citizenship application” says Javaria Jamil, Legal Director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice. “We will have lawyers, and trained volunteers at the free citizenship workshop to help fill out application, interpret the information and answer any questions. We are committed to connecting lawful permanent residents (LPRs) to trusted legal assistance and critical information that simplifies the naturalization process.”
