WHEN: Thursday, August 30th at 8:30 am PT/11:30 am ET
WHERE: Call-in 646-558-8656, Meeting ID: 245 230 760
WHO:
Nicole Ochi, Supervising Attorney, Asian Americans Advancing Justice - Los Angeles
Brenda Shum, Director of Educational Opportunities Project, Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law Student, Harvard University
Winnie Kao, Litigation Director, Asian Americans Advancing Justice - Asian Law Caucus
WHY: Asian Americans are at the heart of the affirmative action debate. Students for Fair Admissions, led by conservative and affirmative action critic Edward Blum, sued Harvard University, claiming that the university is discriminating against Asian Americans in its race-conscious admissions policy. However, many civil rights organizations, including Asian Americans Advancing Justice contests this claim, and absolutely support the school’s race-conscious admissions policy.
Asian Americans are being used as a cover for Blum’s nefarious plan to destroy affirmative action. A majority of Asian Americans support affirmative action and there is no evidence to suggest that affirmative action has negatively impacted Asian American applicants.
Joined by co-counsels and Asian American students, this press briefing will discuss the filing, Asian Americans and affirmative action, and the implications of a “colorblind” future.
