Atlanta, GA — Advancing Justice - Asian Law Caucus and Advancing Justice-Atlanta issue the following statement on Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’s election win:

“This is a historic election that holds the promise of momentous change. A record number of people cast their ballots and elected Joseph Biden and Kamala Harris, the first female vice president of Black and South Asian descent. Now the hard work begins to repair the damage of the past and to hold elected leaders accountable for the deep systemic change and long-term investment that our communities need.

Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) are the fastest growing racial and ethnic group among eligible voters. We played and will continue to play a significant role in future elections, particularly in key geographies such as Georgia, where we turned out historic numbers of AAPI voters and fought pernicious voter suppression with Black and other communities of color.

We will not only ask the Biden administration to take steps to undo the harmful anti-immigrant policies implemented by the Trump administration. But we will also demand more, because our communities can’t wait. We will work to defund immigration enforcement and detention, put an end to racial profiling, and make sure all communities are safe and free from surveillance and criminalization. We will invest in our future elections by protecting and expanding voting rights, by continuing to build and work in coalitions, and by increasing representation where AAPIs are growing in numbers.

We stand ready to fight alongside Black, Latinx, and Indigenous communities to fulfill this moment’s promise.”
