Free Citizenship Clinic Hosted by Korean American Organizations with the Support of Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Atlanta

Atlanta, GA, April 10, 2019 — Korean American Coalition Atlanta, The Korean American Association of Greater Atlanta, and Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Atlanta is hosting a Free Citizenship Workshop on April 13, 2019, at the Korean American Community Center. During the workshop volunteers and lawyers will assist eligible green card holders to apply for United States citizenship.

There are nearly 9 million Legal Permanent Residents (LPRs) eligible for citizenship. However, only 10 percent naturalized each year. The goal of the free citizenship workshop is to increase the number of naturalized citizens in Georgia by providing in-language services, fee waivers, and legal review. According to USCIS data, current wait time in Atlanta has stretched to over two years with more than 700,000 immigrants currently waiting for a verdict on their applications it is likely the wait time will continue to increase.

Additionally, due to the Trump administration’s 2020 budget proposal, a 10% increase in the “immigration services surcharge” would apply to all requests to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services in the coming months. Furthermore, with the proposed new rule by the Trump Administration, it could become harder to get a fee waiver. Thus, we strongly urge our community members to act now and get free legal help with your citizenship application.

"Becoming a United States citizen is the best way to protect against deportation for you and your family and there are so many benefits to getting your citizenship”, said Stephanie Cho, Executive Director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Atlanta. “We will have lawyers and trained volunteers at the citizenship clinic to help fill out applications, interpret the information and answer any questions. Now, more than ever, our communities need the rights and protections of citizenship.”

Appointments are encouraged but walk-ins welcome.
