Asian Americans Advancing Justice Voices Opposition to House Sponsored Anti-Immigrant Legislation

Atlanta, GA, January 11, 2018 — Yesterday, four House members introduced legislation that would end the family-based immigration system. The legislation, Securing America's Future Act, was introduced by House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte, House Immigration Subcommittee Chairman Raul Labrador, House Homeland Security Chairman Michael McCaul, and House Border Subcommittee Chairwoman Martha McSally.

Advancing Justice, an affiliation of five Asian American civil rights organizations, responds to the introduction of this bill with the following statement:

“The misnamed Securing America’s Future Act is legislation that is an affront to the spirit and values of America as a land of immigrants. It proposes to strip the rights of Americans to sponsor their parents, siblings, or adult children, and it eliminates the ability of lawful permanent residents to sponsor unmarried adult children. Its singular aim is to separate families and attempt to kill any deal that helps DACA recipients obtain a path to citizenship.

This flawed bill would cut the number of immigrants welcomed to the U.S. each year in half and end our diversity visa program. It would create an abusive agricultural guestworker program, withhold funding from sanctuary cities, waste resources on a Southern border wall, and further militarize the border among other harmful provisions.

Gutting family immigration, ending the diversity visa program, and creating a second-class status for farmworkers and undocumented youth are not what this country is about. We urge our lawmakers and the White House to stop treating people like pawns in their political games, put aside their white supremacist attacks on immigrants, and get serious about passing a legislative solution for DACA recipients.”
